SV Family Tree.

Slum Village and E1 Records are prepping for the July 29th release of Villa Manifesto and judging by the tracklisting, the LP looks mighty healthy. Having dealt with a pair of serious losses, namely the passing of founding members J Dilla in 2006 and Baatin last year, T3 says that, barring unexpected support for the project, this is likely to be the group’s final full-length venture. By unleashing stored material from both Dilla and Baatin, this is a unique project of sorts as it features work from the original trio as well as newer additions Elzhi and Illa J (Dilla’s younger brother). SV has definitely left an indelible imprint on hip-hop and helped establish the signature Detroit sound that helped catapult artists like Royce, Black Milk (who also has an album dropping in the near future), and even Eminem. Their run of success hasn’t been without tragedy, but they have remained a consistent force throughout. If you haven’t yet copped the classic Fantastic Vol. 2, do yourself a favor and get it now. Let’s hope there is enough buzz generated by Villa Manifesto to force SV to get back in the lab for another round.

For now, here is a little taste of things to come with the late, great Jay Dee behind the boards.
