Elzhi has been bubbling on the Detroit underground circuit for a hot minutes now, but despite dropping an incredible debut with The Preface back in 2008 (not to mention solid work as part of the rebooted Slum Village) has yet to make the leap into the widespread consciousness. I can’t think of a better way to make that leap than paying homage the greatest record ever dropped on the genre, Nas’ magnum opus Illmatic. Though recreating a classic is a tough gig, El adds enough of his own touch to put an indelible Detroit stamp on Esco’s pantheon project. There are few artists in hip-hop today that could do justice to such an ambitious effort. Elzhi just did.
